Joseph Daryl Barr

Joseph Daryl Barr was born at home in Albany, GA on December 22, 1939 to the late Angus and Lois Pelham Barr. Since Joe was the fourth boy in the family and Christmas was imminent, his parents did not have time to arrange a birth certificate. When Joe was five, his mother manufactured an age to allow him to enter first grade. A few years later he was peddling newspapers alone on the streets of downtown Albany then bagging groceries at Colonial Stores. After graduating from Albany High School in 1957, Joe entered Georgia Southwestern College, where he played baseball, but left early to marry his high school sweetheart, Patricia Henderson. Three children were born to Joe and Patricia. 

Joe’s adult work career began as a route driver for Flint Industrial Laundry, where as a commission-based route driver. Joe earned more than his father. He became legendary when he signed the biggest account the laundry ever had, Dobbins Air Force Base, and ordered himself an air-conditioned company van to celebrate. Later, Joe joined Sears, Roebuck in furniture and contractor sales, moving his family on a whim from Albany to the Sears store in Great Falls, Montana. Joe finished his Sears career with over twenty years as an Allstate agent in Savannah, GA. Everywhere he worked, Joe was a zealous advocate for his customers and clients, regularly winning sales awards, which included trips all over the world.

During his years with the industrial laundry, Joe picked up the game of golf, becoming so proficient he was offered a sponsorship to try for the Tour. Although he declined, golf remained the love of his life until illness prevented him from swinging a club. He won many flights in golf championships, once by skipping ball across a lagoon for an eagle at the Landings Club, where he was a member for 32 years. Two of his nine hole-in-ones were made after he was diagnosed with his final illness. 

In 1982 Joe prudently married his lawyer, Karen Dove Barr and they remained married nearly 40 years until his death on December 12, 2021. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by two brothers, Sanford and Daniel Barr; and a sister, Janis Barr Adams.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Dove Barr; daughters, Cynthia Barr Lowrey (Robert), Wendy Barr Corbin (Tom), and Tricia Barr Ainsworth; stepchildren, Dr. Melissa Dove Wynn (Dr. Alex) and Chad Dove; nine grandchildren, Kathryn Gilmer, Kristin Gilmer, Knox Corbin, Natalie Corbin, Olivia Ainsworth, Hope Ainsworth, Madeline Wynn, Alex Wynn, III, and  Andrew Wynn; and one great-granddaughter, Sophia Wittmer.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church with Reverend Hale Bishop officiating.  A private reception will immediately follow the service at The Landings Club, Palmetto Plantation.
